Quality firewood from Calverstown, Co. Kildare

About Kildare Logs · Since 2014

Local roots.
Quality firewood.

Kildare Logs is an Irish-owned firewood business based in Calverstown, Co. Kildare, just off the M9.

What started with one truckload of timber in 2014 has grown into a business processing and delivering thousands of firewood orders each year across Kildare, Dublin and neighbouring areas, as well as supplying selected kiln-dried products nationwide.

We believe buying firewood should be straightforward: properly dried timber, sensible quantities, clear communication and delivery you can actually plan around.

Our story

It started with one load of logs

Kildare Logs began in the summer of 2014.

At the time, founder Peregrine McCall was working in a shop in Naas on minimum wage. After seeing people paying good money for bags of firewood that often appeared poorly dried, he thought there had to be a better way to do it.

The first truckload came from Coillte. It was ordered as softwood, but when it arrived it contained a surprisingly good mix of dry softwood together with ash and birch.

The timber was cut, split and stored in the shed. That first winter, Peregrine tried almost every way of finding customers — net bags, door-to-door sales and even selling firewood from the back of a VW Polo.

The wood sold, but there was an obvious problem: going out looking for every customer was hard work.

The answer was to help customers find Kildare Logs instead.

Peregrine taught himself how to build a website, initially using Joomla before moving to WordPress. That first website became an important part of how the business grew, and the online side of the business has remained central ever since.

Growing year by year

From a VW Polo to a proper firewood operation

Each year the business grew.

A small Caddy van and trailer replaced the car and made larger bag deliveries possible. Later, products began to be palletised and delivered using a small truck with a tail-lift — a system that proved far more practical for customers and allowed the business to grow much faster.

In 2017, Kildare Logs invested in its first firewood processor, moving away from relying primarily on chainsaws and splitters.

In 2019, the business imported its first containers of kiln-dried firewood from Eastern Europe. Demand grew quickly, and when more people were at home during the Covid period, the business experienced another major increase in orders.

Today, Kildare Logs serves thousands of orders each year and has built a customer base of more than 3,000 people, particularly across Kildare and Dublin, while also supplying customers throughout Ireland.

A place with a story

Still based on the family farm

Calverstown is more than simply the location of the yard.

The farm was originally bought by Peregrine's grandfather, passed down to his father, and is now the base from which Kildare Logs operates.

That connection matters to us.

We're building a modern firewood business from a place that has been part of the family for generations, while increasingly using locally sourced Irish timber from Kildare and surrounding counties.

Care at every stage

What quality means to us

For us, quality isn't just about how the firewood looks.

It means paying attention to the entire process — sourcing the right timber, processing it properly, drying it correctly, checking moisture levels, packing it properly and then delivering it in a way customers can rely on.

We don't want to be the business that simply finds the cheapest way to put firewood on a truck.

Our aim is to provide quality throughout the entire experience.

Properly dried

Our firewood is checked for moisture before sale.

For batch testing, logs are split and a sample is taken from the middle of the wood. The sample is weighed, oven dried and weighed again so the change in weight can be used to assess moisture content. We also use moisture meters for faster routine checks.

Properly packed

We pay attention to what customers actually receive.

If a supplier-delivered crate isn't filled properly, we'll top it up ourselves rather than simply sending it out as it arrived.

Customers are paying for a good load of quality firewood, and that's what we want them to receive.

The right wood

We focus on firewood that produces good heat, is properly seasoned or kiln dried and is suitable for real homes, stoves and open fires.

Our range includes kiln-dried hardwood, Irish air-dried hardwood, softwood and kindling.

Produced here in Calverstown

Irish firewood produced in Calverstown

Increasing Irish production is an important part of where Kildare Logs is going.

We source timber locally, including material from forestry on the family farm and from forests in Kildare and neighbouring counties.

In recent years, this has included significant quantities of ash from local plantations.

Timber arrives at the yard on forestry trucks and is initially stacked before processing. Our firewood processors cut it into consistent log lengths, after which it is packed into IBC cages or net bags.

It can then be naturally seasoned in our large polytunnels or dried more quickly using our kiln.

That process gives us much greater control over the firewood we're producing and allows us to continue increasing the amount of Irish-grown firewood we can offer.

Irish production & our imported range

Our kiln-dried range

Alongside our Irish production, we work with established kiln-dried firewood producers in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

We choose substantial suppliers producing at scale and sourcing timber from suitable forestry.

That imported range has been an important part of Kildare Logs since 2019, but we're now also producing kiln-dried firewood ourselves using Irish timber sourced from sustainable forestry in Kildare and neighbouring counties including Wicklow.

Our long-term aim isn't simply to import more firewood.

It's to keep improving our Irish production so locally produced firewood can compete with imported timber on quality while keeping more of the supply chain close to home.

Delivery done differently

We don't hand most local deliveries to a courier.

Our local deliveries are carried out by our own team using our own vehicles.

That gives us much more control over how and when an order reaches a customer.

Before delivery, our team contacts the customer so they know what day their firewood is coming and can be given a more useful delivery window rather than spending the whole day waiting.

Our smaller delivery trucks can also reach places that larger courier vehicles often struggle with.

Where conditions allow, the truck can reverse closer to the property and our electric pallet trucks allow us to position palletised products much more conveniently than a standard kerbside courier service.

What customers can expect

The people behind the firewood

Meet the people behind Kildare Logs

Peregrine McCall

Founder & Owner

Peregrine started Kildare Logs in 2014 with one truckload of timber and has built the business from the ground up.

He remains closely involved in the operation, from sourcing and production to developing the website and improving how customers buy and receive their firewood.

Kildare Logs is operated by Dublin Logs Ltd, which Peregrine formed in 2017. Kildare Logs became part of Dublin Logs Ltd in 2020 while remaining the main customer-facing brand.

Bianca

Family Business

For much of the early years Peregrine operated the business largely by himself, before his wife Bianca joined him to help as the business developed.

Jackie

Customer & Back Office Operations

In 2021, Bianca's cousin Jackie began looking after Kildare Logs as a client through the office operation she had established.

She has worked alongside the business ever since and has become an integral part of the customer service and back-office side of Kildare Logs.

Over the years, Liz and Ana have also supported Jackie with this work.

Agnis

Deliveries

Agnis joined Kildare Logs in 2022 after moving to Ireland following the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Since then he has become one of the main people customers meet when their firewood arrives.

Hard-working, dependable and always willing to help, he plays a major role in making sure orders get from our yard to customers' homes.

Ilja

Firewood Production

Ilja works in the Calverstown yard helping process native timber and increase our production of Irish-grown firewood.

With our kiln operation expanding, this side of the business will become increasingly important as we work towards producing more high-quality Irish kiln-dried logs ourselves.

We also have casual team members who help us during busy periods. Firewood is highly seasonal, and that extra support makes a real difference when cold weather causes demand to rise quickly.

Our home is Kildare

Local first — but not local only

Our home is Kildare.

Calverstown, Kilcullen and the surrounding towns and villages are particularly important to us, and looking after the people around us remains one of our priorities.

Our own local delivery network now covers most of Kildare and Dublin as well as nearby communities across county boundaries — places such as Dunlavin in Wicklow can still very much be part of our local delivery area.

For customers farther away, selected kiln-dried crate products are available for delivery throughout Ireland.

A business built to last

Why we keep investing

The firewood market has changed considerably since Kildare Logs began.

Rather than trying to compete purely by selling as cheaply as possible, we've continued investing in the things we believe make a sustainable firewood business better:

our yard · stock · processors · drying facilities · kiln · vehicles · staff · customer service

Those things cost more than simply buying and reselling wood, but they give us greater control over the product and the service customers receive.

That is the kind of business we're trying to build.

The next chapter

Where we’re going next

The next stage of Kildare Logs is about producing more high-quality Irish firewood.

We want to make better use of sustainable forestry from Kildare and surrounding counties, improve our drying capacity and produce Irish kiln-dried logs capable of competing with the best imported firewood.

For us, that's a cleaner and more local way of doing what we've been trying to do since the beginning:

keep homes warm with good firewood and look after the people around us.

Good firewood.
Warmer homes.
A stronger local supply.

Quality firewood. Properly prepared. Reliably delivered.
